French windows designed to look tall and decorative are actually functioning doors and have been around the Renaissance age. They have always been the popular choice as the window panes are from ceiling to the floor allowing significant room for natural light. They are generally customized and can fit any opening but they are typically fitted to the exterior of the homes in to a balcony but they can also serve at bedroom doors.
Although the basic structure is the same for French windows, but we have specific classifications, sub-categories from which you can choose.
* One-Lite: This is the simplest type of French window. It comprises of two separate window doors that open outwards from the center. Each door is fitted with a single piece of glass to let the greatest amount of light. The glass is often clear but it can be frosted, tinted, or stained with designs.
* Divided Lite: This type of window is almost similar to the first category with slight variation. It consists of two hinged doors which open outwards from the center. They are not made of single panes but are crisscrossed with as many as 15 panes. Of course, all panes need not be of the same size. Some consists of a large pane along the top with several small panes underneath. This can be designed and altered to have a creative effect.
* Bi-fold: In this type, instead of two doors that open outwards, bi-fold windows open side-effects to sides folding up one on top of the other like an accordion. It may have more than two windows and stretch along the entire wall like 4 to 5 windows that open and closes by folding on one side. Some bi-fold have single pane like one-lite and still some may have more than two panes like divided-lite.
